Our Mission

The Electric Dragons promote the sport and culture of dragon boating for members, family, and friends by bringing together people with diverse backgrounds to meet, share cultural experiences, and have fun while enjoying the benefit of physical fitness from dragon boating.

Our Vision

The Electric Dragons strive to be a well recognized organization in the dragon boat community by consistently demonstrating high standards, partnering with charity groups, fostering membership/participant diversity, and providing an enjoyable teaming experience.

Our Operating Principles

  • The Electric Dragons recruit and train to compete in the annual Long Beach Dragon Boat Tournament as well as tournaments in other cities, states, and countries as funding permits. Participation in tournaments is optional.
  • The Electric Dragons provide the environment, coaching, and equipment for new and experienced paddlers.

Our History

The Electric Dragons is a corporate team and is sponsored by Southern California Edison (SCE). In 2005, the Edison Chinese Connection (ECC), which is one of the affinity groups from SCE, expressed an interest in starting a team after contacting ICEA. Dragon boating was viewed as a fun opportunity to expand the ethnic diversity and Chinese cultural awareness across the company. The team started in mid-June, just six weeks before the Long Beach festival and race in July. Due to the high energy & excitement of this activity, a full team was established in just a few weeks. Electric Dragons team members consist of SCE employees, family, and friends.

The success of the Electric Dragons from the beginning is attributed to having a good, experienced coach. During the first year, none of the Electric Dragons had paddled before - many had not even heard of dragon boating! Within a few weeks, the Electric Dragons were trained and ready to race in the Long Beach festival – the team even brought home some hardware!.

The Electric Dragons is continuing to strengthen its operation and is becoming more structured with experience. A great part of the Electric Dragons’ positive reputation and success is due to its strong committee consisting of talented, team-oriented leaders. The endless hours required to successfully operate a large corporate team takes a significant amount of commitment from a dedicated committee. Another success factor for the Electric Dragons is its membership consisting of diverse, fun, and friendly team members.
